Shopify Protect Alternatives for Australian Merchants (2026)

Shopify Protect Alternatives for Australian Merchants (2026)

Shopify Protect isn't available to Australian merchants, so "what's the alternative" is really three different questions — chargeback guarantee apps, dispute automation tools, and basic fraud screening. What each actually does, and how to choose.

If you run a Shopify store in Australia, you already know Shopify Protect — the platform's own chargeback guarantee — isn't available to you; our guide to fraud and chargeback prevention for Australian Shopify stores covers why and what to do about it using Shopify's built-in tools. This post goes one step further: if you want something closer to what Shopify Protect actually does — not just better fraud screening, but a real guarantee — which third-party apps genuinely offer that, and which ones are solving a different problem entirely.

"Alternative" Means Three Different Things

Before comparing apps, it's worth being precise about what you're actually shopping for, because the category gets marketed as one thing when it's really three:

  • Chargeback guarantee apps — these approve or decline orders on your behalf, and if an order they approved turns out to be fraudulent, they reimburse you for the chargeback. This is the closest match to what Shopify Protect does: the liability shifts off you.
  • Prevention and screening apps — these flag risky orders with more sophisticated signals than Shopify's native fraud analysis, but the decision and the liability stay with you. You get better information, not a guarantee.
  • Dispute automation and recovery apps — these don't try to stop a chargeback from happening at all. They step in after one lands, automate the evidence submission, and are built to maximise your odds of winning the dispute.

None of these is strictly better than the others — they solve different problems, and which one fits depends on how much fraud is actually costing you versus how much of your time disputes are eating.

Chargeback Guarantee Apps: The Closest Match to Shopify Protect

  • Signifyd — one of the more established players in this space, Signifyd screens orders and offers a genuine chargeback guarantee on the ones it approves, positioning itself around a high automated approval rate so legitimate orders aren't needlessly held up.
  • NoFraud (now operating as Wyllo) — combines automated screening with human review, and offers a chargeback guarantee on its paid plans. Its screening also covers abuse patterns beyond card fraud, like return abuse and promo/policy exploitation.
  • ClearSale — pairs fraud analytics with a human review team looking at borderline orders, and also backs approved orders with a chargeback guarantee.

The trade-off with all three is the same shape: you're paying (typically a percentage of order value or a per-transaction fee) for someone else to take on the fraud risk, which only makes sense once your order volume and chargeback exposure justify the cost. Pricing and exact Australian availability vary and change, so confirm current terms directly on each app's Shopify App Store listing before committing.

Dispute Automation: Chargeflow

Chargeflow takes a different approach — it doesn't try to stop chargebacks before they happen, it automates the response once one lands, building tailored evidence for each dispute to maximise your win rate. It runs on success-based pricing: broadly, you pay a fee when it prevents a chargeback via an early alert, and a percentage of the amount recovered when it wins a dispute, with nothing charged upfront. That makes it a lower-commitment option if you'd rather not pay for a blanket guarantee but still want the tedious evidence-gathering work taken off your plate.

Enterprise-Tier Options

Kount, Forter, and SEON sit at the more sophisticated end of the market — device fingerprinting, identity verification, and behavioural risk scoring built for high-volume operations. For most small and mid-sized Australian Shopify stores, these are more capability (and cost) than the problem calls for; they earn their keep once fraud losses are a genuine line item on the P&L, not an occasional nuisance.

A Cheaper First Layer

If you're not ready to pay for a guarantee or a recovery service, simpler apps that block suspicious IP ranges, known proxy/VPN traffic, and specific countries can catch a meaningful share of low-effort fraud attempts for a fraction of the cost. It's not a substitute for a proper guarantee if fraud is a real problem for you, but it's a reasonable first step if you're mostly dealing with opportunistic attempts rather than organised fraud.

How to Choose

  • Work out your actual chargeback rate first — Shopify Payments shows this in your admin, and it's the number that tells you whether you have a real problem or an occasional annoyance.
  • High average order value, meaningful chargeback rate — a guarantee app (Signifyd, NoFraud, ClearSale) is usually worth the cost, because the liability shift protects you against the orders that hurt most.
  • Low chargeback rate but disputes eat your time when they happen — a recovery tool like Chargeflow gets the tedious evidence work off your desk without committing to an ongoing guarantee fee.
  • Just getting started or genuinely low risk — Shopify's native fraud analysis plus a cheap blocking app is a reasonable baseline; revisit once volume grows.
  • High volume, enterprise scale — that's when Kount, Forter, or SEON start to make sense on a cost-benefit basis.

Getting Help

Picking the right fraud tool is only half the job — it also has to be configured properly against your actual risk thresholds and checkout flow, or it either blocks good customers or lets the fraud through anyway. If you'd like a hand choosing and setting one of these up against your store's real order patterns, our Shopify Integrations service can take care of it.
